Press Release:

During the month of April, Barbara De Pirro, Artist in Residence at the Museum of Glass in Tacoma has taken the experience to new levels. As both a fine artist and art educator she has found a way to achieve both.

"I was very curious to see how the cross pollination of mediums would express itself, art glass into mine, painting and printmaking. I have to say, it has influenced every artistic gesture! Each day I paint and print papers, layering and embedding them into my paintings under a transparent veil of acrylic, creating a very glass like surface. I find myself exploring the depths of this visual space; opaque, translucent and transparent, with imagery and texture within each."

Not only do hundreds of visitors have the opportunity to observe Barbara painting, printing and collaging but they each can pull up a stool and create their own collage using her original papers. In addition to the basic painting, printmaking and collage processes, visitors will observe how these can be applied to both 2D and 3D art forms. For many it has broadened their view of what collage can be, beyond basic craft into Fine Art. As an eco-conscious artist Barbara has layered into the educational experience, ideas of how to reuse materials, creating printmaking tools and her sculpture armatures using both found and recycled materials.

"I have been so absolutely amazed at the work that has come out of this studio; the age range of artists, pre-school to adult, experienced artists to beginners, pulling from locations, regional, national and international. Enthusiastically, not only am I exhibiting my own art, but that of all the visiting artists who have honored me with their creativity."
